Can you explain your counselling style and approach?

I draw from my education, training and life experiences to help you reach your goals. Our time together includes space to explore your struggles, feel heard and understood. Together, we find a pace and style that works for you to create the shift you are seeking.

I combine thinking and feeling  with therapeutic exercises to help you process your experiences and create change. Along the way we may explore how you feel in your body to help ‘chew and digest’ life circumstances. We may also consider your lines of thinking to build awareness and empower you to create choice where you can.

We may acknowledge your supports and where you lean (in relationships and in other areas like nature) to connect to your solid sturdy self. I also hold the belief that you know what is best for you. You set the pace and it is my goal to walk alongside you in compassion and respect.

What makes your counselling style effective?

While I am trained to work as a counsellor, I also have specific training to work in perinatal mental health.

With over 10 years of experience I have worked with Many parents (individuals and couples) to offer effective and lasting support.

I have been there. I know what it’s like to struggle and feel stuck and unsupported. I can relate and offer successes from my life experiences along with effective theory and techniques.

What can I expect in my free 15-minute online consult?

In your free online consultation, we will get to know one another to determine if we are a good fit to work together. I will ask what you are currently struggling with and what your goals are. We will go over any questions you have and how I may be of service to you. Consultations are online using a safe, secure platform called Jane App.

How are online sessions done?

Online counselling sessions are on Jane App – a safe and secure online platform. This method allows you to have a session from anywhere including the comfort of your own home. It eliminates travel time to and from my office. Online counselling allows us to connect with more than one person in multiple places (couples counselling or family counselling). It also offers more flexibility on arranging sessions that fit your schedule. For example, if you are home with your child and want to have a counselling session during their nap time, meeting online allows us to connect quickly and easily.

Is online counselling as effective as in-person counselling?

Absolutely. Online therapy and online counselling is one of the fastest growing methods of therapy delivery. Whether it is in person or virtually using Zoom, you are heard, seen and guided towards your goals and living the life you deserve. Online counselling offers us the ability to connect from anywhere and offers you more flexibility in scheduling.

Where do you offer your counselling services?

I am located in Victoria, BC with an office near Fort and Cook Street. I also offer online counselling to clients throughout BC on a safe and secure platform called Jane App.

Can my child attend counselling sessions with me?

Yes! If bringing your baby means you will get the support you need to express and heal, then please do. I believe the world would benefit from more places allowing mothers to feel comfortable bringing their babies, especially when they are young and need to be close to you. This allows you to still get your needs met, while meeting their needs. It is important to consider that if your baby attends, it will affect the style of counselling session we have and the types of processes we engage in. We will consider what is best for you and the baby.

Can I bring someone with me to an in-person counselling session?

Yes. If you feel you want support during our counselling session together then please let me know ahead of time and we can discuss. In this case the person would be support to you and not involved in the counselling process.
If you want to have a counselling session with someone (such as your partner or a family member), I offer couples counselling for 2 people. You can book a session for 2, which is $180.

Does my insurance or extended medical benefits cover counselling services?

Before our first session, please check with your extended medical or insurance provider to see if they cover counselling services from a Registered Clinical Counsellor accredited with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (#19169).

If you have coverage, you will be required to first pay Theresa Gulliver Counselling for the session in full and then submit your receipt to your insurance company for reimbursement.
